Wildwood Half Marathon Recap

Another Wild Half in the books! This is what was on my Facebook page this morning.

Wild half 2014

Last year was so sunny! It was beautiful, but hot. It was a tough run for me with the heat. This year my alarm went off at 4am to get up and ready for the drive to the race with Holly. Of course I had my usual pre race fuel.

Holly and I both swear by Ucan on race day, but she follows the directions and drinks it 30 minutes before the race starts. I drink it on the ride to the race with my protein bar and coffee. ūüėȬ† Ucan is a complex carbohydrate that stabilizes bloodsugar over time, providing a carbohydrate source to your body over a longer period of time. We have both been using it for more than a year and love it.

Wild Half

Holly and I have been running races together for years now – literally! We don’t live close to each other, so it is great when we can race together. We caught up on the hour plus ride and enjoyed the pre race excitement. Here we are in the chute – way behind where we should have started! Of course I think the beginning of the race leap frog game is one of the best parts of a race!

Me and Hol

The race itself was great. The crowd support and volunteer support for this race is probably the best of any race I have ever done. There are people cheering for you the whole way – and you know there are always times during a race when you really need that. The course itself is beautiful. You run on the boardwalk along the ocean, cross the inlet and two small bridges before you turn around and come back. I love out and back courses. I like knowing when I am halfway done and you are guaranteed to get a nice breeze at least one way!

Race views

This bridge was probably the steepest part of the course.

Bridge to Stone Harbor

It is one of those little bridges that opens for boats to pass under. The grate is not fun to run on, especially when it’s wet! But it’s always fun to add new things to your running experiences.

This race is run by CGI Racing. I run a few of their races every year and love their mile marker signs and finish line. You can see them really well. It’s a great feeling when you can see the finish line!

Finish line

It was a great race morning, especially since it was cloudy this year! I didn’t PR, but my time was better than I ran at this race last year.

Wildwood Half Time

A big thanks to my mom and dad for always taking such good care of my boys while I race. I couldn’t do it without them! And the boys love having special time with Nana and Popop while I race.

My mom and me

Yes, my team did have a game later in the day. It was an exciting game ending with a somewhat controversial goal scored against us for a 2-2 tie. Overall a great day!

Hot or Not

I finally did it РI went to hot yoga with the girls.  It has been more than a year since Dawn and Tara tried to convince me it was the best thing ever.  I held out with the full list of regular excuses.  Plus everyone knows I am terrible at cross training.  Then it started to seem like everyone was going to Hot or Not Рand everyone loved it.  Finally, yesterday a new friend asked me to go in an hour.  Perfect!  Not enough time to talk myself out of it and I get to spend time with a new friend.  Thanks so much, Paula!

So here’s the deal.¬† Do not go to hot yoga unless you have the time to make it a regular habit.¬† It is amazing and totally addicting.¬† Some of it was tough for me.¬† I could not believe it when I looked around at my friends all doing the crow position.¬† And a few others that I can’t remember the names of.¬† So now I have a new goal.¬† Even though you probably don’t have an ounce of water left in your body when you are done, you leave feeling totally refreshed.¬† See you next week, girls!

Jeannette and I braved the weather yesterday to pick up our packets for the race on Sunday.  Yikes!  Now that was a downpour!  We drove right into it.  Everything in Wildwood was flooded.  We got out of the car and the water was literally past our ankles.  I had to roll up my jeans and take off my sandals.  Jeannette on the other hand had on capris so she ran right to the building.  Nice to totally abandon me!  The lady working registration had my back though.  Just wait until tomorrow Missy!  Just kidding.  I love running with my girls.  And thanks for driving in that mess, Jeannette.

Wildwood wash out

Tomorrow I have a new lucky number.

Melissa has inspired me, once again, to be my best.¬† I was seriously considering taking it easy.¬† She knows me so well though and knows exactly what to say to whip me into shape.¬† Thanks.¬† I hope I can live up to your prediction.¬† Can’t wait until you finally have your sweet boy and can get back to running!

Another disappointing race shirt.¬† Does anyone like white oversized tech shirts with sleeves that are way too long???¬† And really, a gender specific option should be the standard for a large race like this one.¬† I am so thankful that I often get to design the shirts for our club’s races.¬† Maybe I should solicit feedback….¬† Maybe I am the only one who likes them!¬† Anyway,¬†I think I will make a race shirt quilt after all.

Time to carb load.¬† I have cut this down to one day for a half.¬† I know its supposed to be a treat, but I don’t like it.¬† It does not make me feel good at all.¬† But it is helpful on race day.

So, I am wondering, have you tried hot yoga?  Do you like it?

Also, do you like carb loading?

Race Weekend Is Almost Here!

First of all, I have a guest blogger tonight.¬† Fezziwig insists he has something to add and keeps walking on the keyboard.¬† Good thing he is cute.¬† Big dogs are man’s best friend, but the little ones are just for us girls.¬† I know my friend Margie would agree.¬† You should see her cutie!

I am getting really excited for the Wild Half this weekend.  Apparently there are less than 2 days and 8 hours until I will be freezing at the starting line with my great friends, hoping my Garmin gets a location and dying to break out of the crowd and start running.  Sounds like fun, right?

There is nothing like the fun and excitement of a race with a bunch of friends.  Jeannette and I are heading down to packet pickup tomorrow :) .  Although it is sometimes tough to fit more than one day of race activities into your schedule, I love it when we can.  I was going to take it easy at this one since I met my time goal in Atlantic City, but who knows?  Some friends are looking for a PR and I will probably stick with them.

And really what is not to enjoy when the entire course is along the beach?¬† I have not run this race previously and I am hoping it is as good as I think it is going to be.¬† We even get to run across two of the little bridges!¬† Let’s hope the weather holds out.¬† The only time it is not fun running at the beach is when there are gale force winds – like at the NJ Marathon last year.¬† Not good.¬† But it is supposed to be perfect weather¬†this weekend – partly sunny and 65 degrees.¬† Now all that is left is figuring out what to wear!

By the way, have you tried these?  They are so good!  Yes, I ate the entire 1.5 pounds in one day.

So, I am wondering, do you race in the summer?
