Time Off

You may have noticed I took some time off from blogging. Sometimes time off is just necessary, I guess. The good news is that I got caught up on some things that were getting really tough to fit in, including sleep. Wearing my Jawbone Up made it really clear to me that I am not getting nearly enough sleep! So this week I made up for that by getting a few early nights in. When was the last time you got to bed early? You should try it.

I love this little reminder. Being present and appreciating our every day activities is not always easy, but it can change your life. Also, I love the SUP yoga picture.  It reminds me of being the only person to fall off of my paddleboard last summer during yoga class! Yup, I look over at Jeannette doing a perfect handstand on her paddleboard and end up in the water. 😉 I have been loving yoga again lately since I am sidelined from running. Some days I really just need to get out there though. I know, I know. So when I just need a run, I make it a very little run. And only if my leg can handle it that day.

I guess this is probably why.

The boys and I decided to have a picnic dinner on the bay tonight and watch the sunset. It was a beautiful night.

We love living close to the water.

At first the boys didn’t want to give up their video games, but they ended up so happy we went. It is a great feeling when your kids thank you for taking them somewhere.

It is getting dark so much earlier already! It seems like it was just summer break.

Here we are just having fun at home.

And Fezzy in the tub. He loves taking a bath! He runs around in circles he is so excited.

So, I am wondering, when was the last time you went to bed early and were not sick?

Beach Sunsets

Every summer the boys and I make sure we see at least one sunset and one sunrise on the beach.

Lighthouse sunset

We picked a good night for it!

There was actually a bonfire and a band too, but the sunset might have been the biggest attraction.  We went with our good friends and the boys had a blast playing football and climbing on the rocks.

This is what happens when you give boys s’mores.

Melissa and I got to catch up while Paul played with the boys.  Thanks Paul!

Isn’t this a crazy picture?

The weekend actually started for me with a long run.

Then we had a delicious lunch at Nana’s house.  This actually has quinoa, hummus, spinach, kale, edamame, black beans and tomatoes in it!  So yummy!

We ended the weekend with a walk in the park.  Well, Fezzy walked most of it.

So, I am wondering, did you see Transformers this weekend?  Did you like it?

New Goals

Many of the things that have kept us busy and full of anticipation seem to be winding down around here lately.  For example, tonight was our last soccer practice with the Red Dragons.  It was such a fun practice.  We made sure to do all of the kids’ favorites.  We played Sharks and Minnows, scrimmaged and ran races.  (Can you believe it?  The kids always request running races!)

My dad and I have decided to definitely coach a travel team going forward, so hopefully we will see a lot of our players on our new team.  It’s time to take my little keeper to the next level!  It will be exciting.

We will be sad to say goodbye to our guys at the last game Saturday.  At least they will get their medals!  Who doesn’t love a medal?

soccer1 It is time to set some new running goals too.  I only have one race left on my calendar and my training is feeling a bit flat.  I have been running by the ocean lately for inspiration.

beach2How can you not feel good after a workout with that view?  The island is 18 miles long, so it is just a matter of choosing your distance and going.  It is much quieter now that the summer is over.  I like the crowds.  The island feels festive to me when they are there.  But even in the winter I love living here with the bay on one side and the ocean on the other.

I am seeing the orthopedist tomorrow for my heel.  I am going to wait to see what he says before I set my new goal.  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

We tried another new fall recipe that was awesome.  Pumpkin alfredo pasta.  http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/tortellini-with-pumpkin-alfredo-sauce-recipe/index.html

Of course I couldn’t just follow the recipe.  I added garlic (which makes almost everything better in our house!), cinnamon and sage and substituted the cream with light cream.  If you like savory pumpkin dishes, you will love this!

So, I am wondering, when do you set new goals?

Lobster Bisque and Fudge

Lobster Bisque and Fudge.  It’s safe to say it was not a low cal night!

Chowda Sign

This is a favorite tradition on the island that the boys and I try to do a couple of times each summer.  Chowda makes the best lobster bisque you will ever taste, and, luckily for me, my boys agree.

Many of the shops and restaurants on the island close after Labor Day, so we had to get one last bread bowl in!  Yummy.  Then the boys each chose a fudge flavor for dessert from Country Kettle.  Chocolate and creamsicle tonight.

Fudge Box Fudge

They were making fudge while we were there so we got to watch that for a bit.  : )  Do you see it in the background?

Then we walked over to the playground on the bay to watch the sunset.  It was a little cloudy, but there was still a sunset.

It was a special night with my boys.  We completed one of our summer traditions, and I know we will remember these times for years to come.

So, I am wondering, what is your favorite flavor of fudge?

I am also wondering, what food says “summer” to you?
