Outside for Days

Finally! The weather has actually been nice for a few days in a row. This is the perfect time of year for running and soccer – and pretty much anything else you want to do outside.

The sky has been so amazing lately.Sky

It almost feels like you can touch the clouds.

So basically we have come inside only to eat. And to get froyo. :-)

Froyo

Aidan and I had the best trip to Philly today. We chatted and caught up on what is going on with each other. It’s nice to spend quality time with your kids.

Penn

Running and soccer on the schedule for tomorrow – what a surprise!

So, I am wondering, why is the temperature already 10 degrees warmer in the city? It’s not summer yet.

Getting Back Outside

The weather has finally caught up with the season and we are spending as much time outside as we can. My soccer guy is loving it.

Goalkeeper

It’s great to be able to get some good practice time in before our game this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Of course you can’t really beat Soccer Shots by the lake in the morning. It is so pretty! The younger kids are very cute too. I am getting lots of hugs and flowers and excited happy faces.

Aidan is such a good sport about coming to all of our soccer activities. It’s a good thing he is our team scorekeeper now.

My Aidan

Sometimes it’s hard to get one on one time with your kids. Aidan and I got some quality time in on our trip to Philly this week. We had the best chats. :-)

The girls and I decided the lake is a good place to run this week too. I’m taking it easy with mileage after a busy running week last week.

I love running with the girls. We talk about everything and since I just follow them, I barely even know where we ran. It’s hard to believe we ran 5 miles when we are done because it goes so fast!

Cub Scout camping and lots of soccer coming up this weekend. What about you?

A Picture Says A Thousand Words

Happy April Fool’s Day! We started the day off right with breakfast pranks.

April fools breakfast

The boys had a few of their own too… The weather was no joke today! Perfect for the egg hunt at Dane’s Easter party.

And coaching soccer by the lake…

And getting in my last training run by the bay before the Hot Chocolate 15k this weekend. I hope the course is not on the roads that are hilly and slanted at the same time like the Philly Love Run and the Philly Rock and Roll Half. Wish I thought of that before I signed up! The swag was so good I didn’t think about anything else! Plus, I wanted to do this race last year and it was the same day as the April Fools Half.

Marina

Expo / packet pickup tomorrow. And soccer shots. And practice with my team. And finishing up Easter stuff. Just another day around here!

April Fool’s Pranks for Kids

April Fool’s Day breakfast is always fun at our house. When the boys were little I put their plastic play food at the table for breakfast and they thought it was hilarious. Since then, April Fool’s is all about breakfast in our house. It’s a fun way to start the day and I get the first prank in before school. 😉 We have done frozen cereal, pudding milk, icing sandwiches. This year on deck are the peach and yogurt egg (except I might use lemon curd for the yolk – we’ll see) and jello juice. (Don’t tell them!)

I’ll send in a wormy apple for lunch. Maybe with some extra worms for fun.

Two holidays in one week is just about all I can take. I have soo much to get done for Easter before my race on Saturday! But it’s all good stuff. This year we found a nighttime egg hunt for older kids. It was the best idea! The kids loved hunting for the eggs at night and no one had to worry about the little kids not getting eggs. We had to bribe them with froyo to leave after their baskets were spilling over with eggs.

Jeannette and I made time for an awesome run today to decompress a bit after a crazy weekend.

Running buddies

It started with a scrimmage. Check out my awesome soccer team. The Hurricanes are back together and I am so excited for another great season with these boys.

Now that the weather is supposed to be warming up, Nerf Wars are back in session too.

Dane and I went bike riding while Aidan was capturing the flag.

I swear I do shower and wash my hair.

The boys caught up with their Scout buddies this weekend to work on the video game pin. We really had to twist their arms for this one….

And guess who got a cell phone? He’s just a little happy about it.

My mom and dad had us to dinner tonight. My mom made a delicious salad that I will share the recipe for when I remember to get it from her.

Thanks guys!

So, I am wondering, what is your favorite April Fool’s prank?

Acai Bowls and Why Social Media Is Not Bad

running

Run # 2 this week, followed by the “worst thing ever for my leg” long drive, and I am feeling ok. Fingers crossed. I did have the best acai bowl after my run, so maybe that helped. I am trying really hard to keep my nutrition the best it can be to get past this. If you haven’t had an acai bowl yet, you should try one.

Acai bowl

Acai (ah-sigh-ee) berries are small purple berries that look similar to blueberries and come from the acai palm tree. They are considered a superfood because they are packed with antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. The only problem is that they grow mostly in the Brazilian amazon rain forest so they are not easy to find. You can get a bunch of your friends together and get 60 3.5 ounce bags of frozen pureed berries from Amazon. Or you can go to the Sambazon website and find a local store to buy smaller quantities.

Acai berries

Ok, so once you have the pureed acai berries, what do you do with them? They are delicious in shakes, smoothies, over yogurt. But I think one of the best ways to try them is in an acai bowl. An acai bowl is kind of like pudding where the main ingredient is acai berries. Then you add pretty much any other ingredient that you like. Some of the most popular additions are bananas and granola. Here are some recipes to get you started.

Hope you love them as much as I do! Speaking of things to love, I can’t stop listening to this song lately.

A parting thought about social media. It gets a bad wrap pretty often. You may hear of teenagers abusing it or about the “annoying” posts your friends put up. But overall, social media is a positive way to share what is good in our lives. That may be something simple like a great new recipe you tried or a workout you accomplished, or something major like overcoming a health issue. Seeing our friends’ accomplishments posted pushes us to be better as well. I’ll take a community of inspiration and support any day over the dramatic, negative reporting of traditional media. Just saying.

Guess What I have Been Doing

This is really going to shock you, I know. I guess I am still pretty excited about it.

I have been running every chance I get. I realized last week that as long as I don’t run hills, my leg is fine. (No, really! Many of you know how much I used to hate hills and avoid them at all costs, but I got over that. My leg is just not ready for them yet.) So I am trying to talk the girls into going out as much as we can. I talked them into signing up for my favorite race so now they have to train with me!  Yay!!! 😉  April Fool’s Half, here we come. We are going to have the best time.

But if they can’t make it, I am learning to love running by myself again. It’s not as much fun as being with friends, but you get something totally different out of it. After running by myself my head is totally clear.

Running in the snow is so beautiful. Today was not runnable on the trail without Trax though. I’m so glad I got them last winter!

I just went through my spring race calendar and I am getting really excited. :-)

Aidan made a ping pong ball launcher in Scouts. Thanks, Mr. Gatto!  Actually he loves it. He would like to bring it to his next Nerf War, but we decided that wouldn’t be fair.

20150129_204236

We finally had a real snow day. Not nearly as much as we were expecting, but enough to cancel school. Good enough!

IMG_20150129_205908

The girls and I snuck some girl time in too. Always a blast. Sushi and RumChata and lots of laughs.

So, I am wondering, do you like to talk while you run, or just listen?

Filling Buckets

Back to back “Back To School Nights” is exhausting!  I know many of you agree!  But it was great to see where the boys are spending so much of their time now and who they are spending it with. I think we are going to have a good year. :)

fail often

The boys teachers were very inspiring, which is so nice during this crazy transitional time.  They reminded us (and hopefully our kids) of some of the basic lessons that we often take for granted.

Do you remember the story about filling buckets?  It’s a good one to go back to now and then. It reminds us that being kind to others actually makes us happier too.

This week is so busy with activities for the boys but, ironically, I feel like I am not getting to see them much at all. It’s been me and Fezzy, mostly.

This is also an important training week.  I will be relieved when this week is over.

So, I am wondering, are you happy with your child’s teacher this year?
