Race for A Cure

Today we celebrated a great friend’s birthday at hot yoga. I’m so glad she suggested this. It has been too long since we have all seen each other and it has been way too long since I have been to yoga. I forgot that yoga is great for meditation as well as a great workout.  Plus, it’s always fun to hang out with the girls.

Yoga is great for runners because it helps so much with flexibility and preventing running injuries.  Believe it or not, we can do all of these.

But at the end, when it is time for “regular” stretching, we are not so good.  We were cracking up today because there was no way our line of runners could get our legs straight enough to do what the instructor was telling us. 😉

I have decided to run just one 5k this year. I know, I was taking a year off of 5ks, but this is for a really good cause. It is the Susan G. Komen Race for A Cure 5k. I am running it in honor of a dear friend of mine who is currently undergoing chemotherapy. She is so strong and brave. I wish so much that I could do more to help her with this battle.

A Seagull Ate My Lunch!

We are settling into summer vacation quite nicely!  Today the boys and I met Gina and Eileen at “our” beach, which has been our standard summer plans for the last 5 years!  The kids jumped right back into beach fun and even talked us into “Arctic Al” – the favorite beach ice cream man.  Thanks girls for that one!  I owe you!  Here are the kids on their boogie boards.  We did not even pose them for this shot.

Of course I brought a bar for lunch!  The girls and I were watching the kids and chatting when something happened that hasn’t happened to me in like 15 years.  A seagull came from behind me and stole my bar right out of my hand!  The kids thought it was hysterical.  See – even the seagulls like my protein bars!  I can tell you they did not try to steal Eileen and Gina’s yogurts. 😉  Too bad I got this terrible injury in the process.

I guess I will live.  I was forced to eat chips for lunch though.  But guess what?  I did not have any diet (or regular) soda today!  This was tough because a soda is really good to wake you up after the beach.  So I am doing well so far staying away from soda and artificial sweeteners.  How about you?  By the way, sucrose is not an artificial sweetener!  (You know who I am talking to. ; ) )

Today was my hardest yoga class so far.  Since I will have this instructor all summer I am either going to get strong quickly or die trying.  I was warned that she is tough, but I was not expecting it to be as hard as it was.  Plus, she likes the room EXTRA HOT!  Wish me luck.

So, I am wondering,what leave in conditioner do you use in your hair at the beach?

Mantras

The girls and I went to hot yoga this morning and had a crazy time.  The class was Hot Power Vinyasa with Jenn and it is no joke!  It is definitely the best class I have taken there so far.  I guess I am not the only one who thinks so because there was barely room for everyone’s mats, it was so crowded.  Of course my friends had to sit right in front!  Not the best place for the giggling runners who are not flexible enough to do some crazy modification of the pigeon pose!  OK, maybe that was just me… and maybe Tara.  Here I am with Deirdre, Tara and Gina after class.  Paula volunteered to take the picture for us so she wouldn’t have to be in it!

Our instructor was talking about using mantras in our yoga practice.  I have used mantras before for running too.  Using a mantra means repeating an inspiring phrase that is relevant to something in my life at the time.  It helps me to stay focused on a goal and clears away negative thoughts.  For me, this works.  There is also mantra meditation, where the mantra is not literal.  It is a sound (think Om, for the simplest one) that helps you focus attention inside of you and achieve relaxation.  Another great thing about yoga!

Jeannette and I decided to get in a long slower run on the island yesterday.  As it turns out, we had a lot to talk about!  Ten miles flew by and we didn’t realize until we were done that we had negative splits the whole way.  We beat the rain until around mile 9 – just when we really needed it!  Cool rain is perfect at the end of a long run.

I took the boys to McDonald’s for dinner last night and we had a great time hanging out with no electronics.  This is big for 8 and 10 year old boys!

Gratitude

Life is good, even on the rainy days.  These guys are usually my number one reason why.

Did you ever notice that the gray days make the colors seem more vibrant?  I am so glad that the leaves and flowers are back again!  (Although I could do without all of the yellow pollen on everything!).  Jen and I ran on the trail yesterday and it was so green and pretty!  Can you tell how fast I was going?

I don’t know if I could ever give up running.  I really am so grateful for everything that it brings into my life.

I am hoping this double whammy shin splint / knee pain goes away really soon!  Injuries sometimes sneak up on you slowly over time.

I did run really hard last Sunday.  So today I went to hot yoga with Paula and Gina again.  I can tell already that yoga is going to be good for me.  Of course it improves flexibility – which all runners pretty much need.  But, like running, it is more than just exercise.  It helps you relax and really tune into what is going on with you.  How many of us really pay any attention to how we are doing on a regular basis?  Life is usually too busy to check in with ourselves.  But I am guessing that when we do, the rest of our choices and interactions will be even better.  Guess what?  I can actually do this!  Can’t wait to see what I can do in a couple of months!

So far, yoga makes me starving though!  Is it a good thing I had these in the fridge?  Maybe I should stop buying the large size at BJ’s!

Hot or Not

I finally did it – I went to hot yoga with the girls.  It has been more than a year since Dawn and Tara tried to convince me it was the best thing ever.  I held out with the full list of regular excuses.  Plus everyone knows I am terrible at cross training.  Then it started to seem like everyone was going to Hot or Not – and everyone loved it.  Finally, yesterday a new friend asked me to go in an hour.  Perfect!  Not enough time to talk myself out of it and I get to spend time with a new friend.  Thanks so much, Paula!

So here’s the deal.  Do not go to hot yoga unless you have the time to make it a regular habit.  It is amazing and totally addicting.  Some of it was tough for me.  I could not believe it when I looked around at my friends all doing the crow position.  And a few others that I can’t remember the names of.  So now I have a new goal.  Even though you probably don’t have an ounce of water left in your body when you are done, you leave feeling totally refreshed.  See you next week, girls!

Jeannette and I braved the weather yesterday to pick up our packets for the race on Sunday.  Yikes!  Now that was a downpour!  We drove right into it.  Everything in Wildwood was flooded.  We got out of the car and the water was literally past our ankles.  I had to roll up my jeans and take off my sandals.  Jeannette on the other hand had on capris so she ran right to the building.  Nice to totally abandon me!  The lady working registration had my back though.  Just wait until tomorrow Missy!  Just kidding.  I love running with my girls.  And thanks for driving in that mess, Jeannette.

Melissa has inspired me, once again, to be my best.  I was seriously considering taking it easy.  She knows me so well though and knows exactly what to say to whip me into shape.  Thanks.  I hope I can live up to your prediction.  Can’t wait until you finally have your sweet boy and can get back to running!

Another disappointing race shirt.  Does anyone like white oversized tech shirts with sleeves that are way too long???  And really, a gender specific option should be the standard for a large race like this one.  I am so thankful that I often get to design the shirts for our club’s races.  Maybe I should solicit feedback….  Maybe I am the only one who likes them!  Anyway, I think I will make a race shirt quilt after all.

Time to carb load.  I have cut this down to one day for a half.  I know its supposed to be a treat, but I don’t like it.  It does not make me feel good at all.  But it is helpful on race day.
