It was an exciting day here!  The boys both had awesome basketball games.  Aidan’s team (my team, too!) played the best game they have played all year.  It was amazing to watch them work so well as a team.  And guess what?  My guy scored!!!  A very happy day for us.  One of the downsides of coaching is that I don’t often get pictures during the game.  Here is my guy afterwards.

Dane had a great game too.  The boys have all learned so much this year and the difference in today’s games compared to the beginning of the season is amazing.  Dane is quite a ball player!

I wanted a picture with Dane as well.  :)

In between games, Aidan had tryouts for baseball.  He wasn’t sure he wanted to play this season, but decided he would miss it too much if he didn’t.  He had a lot of fun at tryouts.  We came home and he immediately went to the backyard to practice baseball!

Tomorrow is the big day!  I am very excited.  I will probably be too tired to post anything tomorrow – 4 am is a little early for me!

Weekend Replay

Another weekend over!  Time always seems to fly by.  I am happy for Monday though.  Aidan was just asking Dane and I what our favorite day of the week is.  Aidan likes Friday and Dane likes Saturday.  I agree with both of them – those are always good days.  The boys both agreed that Monday was not their favorite day.  I secretly like Mondays though because I can get back to running.  I almost never have time to run over the weekend and I am ready to go for a run once Monday arrives.

It was another basketball weekend.  These crazy days will be ending soon and I think we will probably miss them.  This weekend the boys games were at the same time.  Since I am coaching Aidan I had to miss Dane’s game.  Aidan’s game was a lot of fun this weekend.  It was a three day weekend and we had a lot of players on vacation.  Only 3 players made the game!  We need 5 players to play a game.  I wish I had permission to post the picture I took of my 3 all stars – it is such a great picture.  Luckily the coach of our opposing team had 2 players he could loan us.  As it turns out, he gave us 2 very good players!  Because of the crazy situation the game was not that serious and I think the boys all had a great time.  Aidan was thrilled that he got to do tip off and all of the boys were happy to be in for the entire game.

A tip off

The Central Park half marathon is this weekend so the final preparations are under way.  Tomorrow is my last “long” run before the race (although it will probably be more of a medium run) and I plan to try out my new smartwool socks.  My friends tell me these keep your feet warm without the plastic bag trick.  I’m not the biggest fan of wearing plastic bags for 13 miles, so I am hoping these work.  I am also hoping it doesn’t rain on Sunday!

I’m am trying to clean up my eating this week.  Valentine’s Day has gotten me off track.  We had dinner tonight at a great friend’s house and that was a step in the right direction.  I am also rediscovering how good and how easy spinach salads are.

Our Cub Scout “Blue and Gold” dinner is this Sunday as well.  This is a big event in the scouting year and we have been preparing for it for a while now.  We will be completing the final touches on our banner and flag this week and making themed desserts.  It will be a busy week!  My mom is an amazing seamstress and she was nice enough to help us sew our flag.  The boys have been working on the details and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

So, I am wondering, do you like Mondays?

Basketball and Birthday Party Prep

It’s Saturday, which means all day basketball in our house.  Dane had an early game, as usual.  I cannot figure out why getting up at 7am on Saturday feels so much earlier than getting up at 6:15 during the week, but it does!  It was worth it though.  Dane and his team played a great game and came away with a win.

Then we were off to Aidan’s game, which was very exciting today.  Our team played so well and Aidan can officially say he won his first game as a 10 year old.

I managed to get ready for Aidan’s birthday party between games.  The goody bags are filled…

And the cookies are made.

As you can see (well see half of it anyway), we solved Aidan’s birthday dessert dilemma with a combination of a Clumsy Ninja ice cream cake from Carvel and chocolate covered oreos.  I hope he has fun tomorrow!

So, I am wondering, at what age do kids usually stop having birthday parties?

Free Lunch

Today I have realized once again that the lessons I learned in economics class in college still permeate my everyday life.  Probably not in exactly the way my professor intended though.  For example, the concept that there is no such thing as a free lunch (Milton Friedman) came to mind today when I realized with finality that now is the time to start that “juice detox” Sandy and I had talked about before Christmas.  Unfortunately there was an opportunity cost to all of those holiday indulgences!  It is hard to bake cookies for 10 days straight and still feel healthy afterwards!

Now the question is timing, really.  I am not very good at not running.  So three days without exercise is probably not going to happen.  I do take weekends off though, so I will probably start on Friday and go through the weekend.  Hopefully I won’t faint at the basketball game.  Just kidding.  I have researched this well and it seems quite safe.  I will post my recipes once I make them.

We had our first basketball practice tonight since break.  Too bad I never remember to take pictures!  Hopefully I will remember this weekend at the game.  The boys are doing so well!  I love seeing their skills improve and they are really coming together as a team.  I am enjoying coaching this sport more than I thought I would and, of course, I love coaching with my dad.  Basketball is a much more intimate sport than soccer – probably because there are less players on each team.  We are 1 and 1 so far.  I know Aidan really wants to win this weekend.  We’ll see!  Dane has his first game this weekend (his level starts later).  Wish us luck!

Aidan has a birthday coming up soon and he will be turning 10!  I can’t believe it.  He has told me this is his most important birthday because it is the only time he will turn double digits.  No pressure.  I am pretty sure he will have a great time.  Now on to the annual challenge of a birthday sweet.  Aidan does not eat cake – in any form.  He does not even like icing.  Chocolate chip cookies are one of his favorites though.  One year I had this great idea to make a layered cookie cake.  Sounds pretty good, right?

No one mentioned that it is absolutely impossible to cut into!  It was very embarrassing in front of 30 kids and their parents when I was sawing into this thing with almost no success!  (I am sure a few of you remember this!)  Finally we just broke pieces off and ate it!  So I am not sure what will be the centerpiece of Aidan’s birthday table, but I am sure it will not be this!

Here is a picture of the boys with their paternal grandparents from 2010.  Aidan would call it a “pic pic” – a picture of a picture.  He even has the teenage lingo going already.  They were so little!  Time flies.

So, I am wondering, have you ever tried a juice detox?

Also, any ideas for Aidan’s birthday “uncake”?
