Camping Weekend

This past weekend was our annual fall camping trip with the Cub Scouts. It is an amazing weekend of fun adventures with friends. It is a ton of work, but definitely worth it. It takes some time to recover though. Here are the boys bringing our gear into camp.

They helped me set up the tent this year. Then they had to try it out, of course.

Friday night we celebrated Dane’s birthday with a birthday skit where he popped out of a giant present and everyone sang Happy Birthday to him. He was so excited for this and then he stayed in the box for the rest of the night. He loved it.

Can you tell?20140926_202657

The next morning was his actual birthday. Cupcakes were perfect for breakfast number 1.

The boys love being with so many friends in the woods.

They also love Gaga Ball.  I know I have mentioned this before.

Next was archery.

And a hike for our younger guys while the older ones went fishing.

We decided to do a little geocaching while we were hiking. Have you tried this? It is a treasure hunting game that uses GPS to help you locate the treasure. You can download this app (or many others) to start. The boys and I love geocaching and always do it when we travel. On this particular hike, I chose the treasure cache that was closest to us. Guess where we found it?  In the Girl Scout camp next door!

After a deep fried turkey dinner (thanksgiving style), it was time for a bonfire and a movie in the woods.  We always watch “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” before the movie.

On Sunday the boys are free to play in the woods with their friends. They love this so much.

It was a great weekend.  Here we are food shopping for the trip at BJs last week.

So, I am wondering, have you ever gone geocaching?

Does your family go camping?

Undefeated! Victory!

It was a crazy weekend of victories and fun for us including soccer, Scouts, a birthday party and trunk or treating.

The Red Dragons soccer team closed out their season this Saturday with a 9-1 win, officially making them an undefeated team!

We had a special spectator (who has not been able to make it to the games this season) come and bring us extra luck.  Thanks Nana!

I am so proud of our team…

And of my guy who had so many shut outs while in goal and 6 points while on the field.

Congratulations Red Dragons!

We had another Victory this weekend as well.  Aidan and the Lightning Warrior Patrol took home the Silver Platter Award at their Scouting event – Webelos Woods!  This event is an outdoor adventure where the older Cub Scout boys get to see first hand some of the skills they will learn as Boy Scouts.  The boys loved spending the day in the woods – especially with the older boys, even if it meant they had to wake up early.  This picture is before we realized Aidan had the wrong hat on.  (What?  It’s only from 2 years ago!)  I guess I am not the only one who needs coffee in the morning!

The boys were all so excited to see the adventures that await them.  They should be so proud of the way they presented themselves to the Boy Scouts.  They are getting so mature – truly young gentlemen.

They learned a lot too.  Aidan is still talking about the “lean-to” shelter he will get to build as a Boy Scout to sleep in overnight.  Hopefully that will be summer camping!

Cheers!  And congratulations Lightning Warrior Patrol Webelos on earning the Silver Platter Award!

To finish off the weekend we went to Trunk or Treat, Round 2.  The boys were all tired, but candy called.  This one was at a local church and was a lot of fun.  The trunks were all decorated great (Bikini Bottom was our favorite), the people were so nice and there was even cotton candy, popcorn and hot chocolate!

The boys left happy and tired after a great weekend.

So, I am wondering, am I the only one who feels like I should donate candy to the trunk or treat events we attend?

Camping Cub Scout Style

Camping with our Cub Scout Pack is an experience our boys will never forget.  We had just under 200 people camping with us this weekend at our local Boy Scout campground.  This site is amazing.  It has 9 campsites along with a beautiful lake, beach, archery and rifle ranges, a parade field and an outdoor stage area.  It is a full immersion “back to nature, back to scouting” experience and the boys can’t get enough of it.

And who can blame them?  They get to do all of the “boy” things they dream of with their great friends ALL WEEKEND!!  Talk about a sleepover!  Our theme this year was Minecamp 2013.  It seems all of the boys at camp, even those not camping with our group, love Minecraft.

After a camp style dinner and skits, the boys kicked off their weekend with a “creeper hunt” – fully equipped with Minecraft torches.

The fun continued the next day with Minecraft themed games.  There was an involved Minecraft obstacle course where the boys had to go through game-like adventures, a scavenger hunt for Minecraft chests, a mining for gems adventure,

a Minecraft bean bag toss, the creeper face and skeleton face puzzles,

and a Minecraft animal round up.

Fishing was fun, as always.  The lake is beautiful and the boys all love fishing.  It is a tournament of sorts – prizes for biggest and smallest fish caught.  All of the fish are released, which makes us moms happy.

My guy even caught his first fish!  It was very exciting, as you can imagine.  I am forever grateful to the person who took the fish off his hook!  Not my thing!

We all tried our hand at archery this trip – even me!  That is, after a lengthy lesson on archery safety (lol).

The older boys received a lesson in fire making that really made their day.  In scouts, only certain older boys who have passed a test are allowed to make the fire.  So this was a big deal for them.

The surprise hit of the weekend was a game new to most of the boys called “GaGa ball.”  You can find a description of the game here: http://www.fallingcreek.com/toolbox/warrior-ball.shtml  and also here: http://www.ultimatecampresource.com/site/camp-activity/gaga-pit-or-israeli-dodgeball.html.  It is kind of like dodge ball, but much safer.  My guy won his first round.

A ga ga

My favorite was the movie in the woods, which included our traditional movie “Its the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” and this year “Wreck It, Ralph.”  We have a big fire and roast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate while we watch the movies.

It was a great trip.  The boys are already asking about our next camping trip!  It takes a lot of effort to make a trip like this happen.  I want to say a big thank you to all of those people who put this trip together for our boys.

So, I am wondering, do you camp with your family or are you more of a hotel person?

Coming Together

I can’t believe the weekend is almost here!  Thankfully I finished the Minecraft skeleton box puzzle in time for camping.  Here it is:

Now it is time for all of the other details – washing sleeping bags, packing clothes and flashlights and bug spray.  The tent and fishing poles are sitting in the foyer waiting for their big weekend.  We have done this trip quite a few times now, so I feel like I know what we need to bring.  Hopefully I won’t forget anything!

The boys are so excited!  It is a good thing too –  I will keep that in mind when I am setting up the tent and doing the rest of the work that goes into this trip.  I will try to post tomorrow after my run, but there is a chance it will be a few days before you hear from me again.  If so, have a great weekend!

So, I am wondering, what are you doing this weekend?

Visions of Last Time Flash Inside My Mind…

I know you’re looking at that cave and you’re feeling kind of brave…Don’t Mine At Night.  Minecraft lyrics keep running through my mind today.  It might have something to do with the million times we listened to that song in preparation for our Minecraft camping trip with Scouts.  I have a feeling Minecraft will be very unpopular with me by the time we are done camping.

Today was a beautiful day for a pirate ride with the Jersey Shore Pirates.  www.jerseyshorepirates.com  My nephew had his birthday party there today and you really could not ask for a better party.  The kids loved it.

Admiral Aidan, Daring Dane and the rest of the young pirates successfully found the treasure, defeated Pirate Pete and celebrated with grog, pizza and cake.

Before we headed off to pirate adventures, our soccer team had another great win – 3 and 0 so far!  My little goalie successfully defended his first penalty kick today.  It was his first experience one on one with a direct kick, and as his mom/coach I was a little nervous.  It was a good kick, but he caught it!  This is the face of a proud kid!  It was an exciting and happy moment for us.

While we were at the game my other guy was making pumpkin cake with Nana.  I wish you could have smelled the house when we walked in!  Heaven!  Needless to say we got forks and dove right in.  My family has an affinity for pumpkin.  Pumpkin muffins, pancakes, pie, soup, we love them all.  The cake was delicious!  Mmm : )

Tomorrow is another busy day…  I can’t believe I have another race and I didn’t get to write about last week’s half marathon yet!  The pictures are in and I will eventually share them.  Tomorrow I am off to Run the Vineyards.  Wish me luck!

So, I am wondering, what is the best kids birthday party you have taken your child to?  What made it so good?
