It’s true, runners do not make good patients. We are probably pretty stubborn as a group and we rarely want to see the big picture of an injury. In our defense, running is very addictive. It just makes you feel good about life. Plus, who wants to give up months of training just before a race? This is my dilemma. Yes, I know it makes no sense at all if you are not a runner. So I am still not running in hopes that I can race on Sunday (5k). And the next Sunday (18 miler). And the one after that (perfect 10 miler).
Cross training it is for now. At least someone was excited about it!
Here are some common reasons runners get injured. Keep these in mind during your training.
My boys are so sweet. Dane got the couch all set up for me after dinner and insisted that I sit down and ice my leg. My sweetie. <3
It has been forever since I ran a 5k. I am really only running this weekend to honor my dear friend and all of the women out there who are battling or have battled breast cancer. There is no race quite as stressful as the 5k because really, anything is possible. This is why I gave them up.
So, I am wondering, – my runner friends, if it was you what would you REALLY do about these upcoming races and training?
Now that the kids are back in school quiet lunch dates with real conversations are possible again. My mom and I met at Schwee Tea for our favorite hummus avocado sandwich and zinger juice. I was so excited I had to take a bite before I could take a picture.
So yummy. I have tried to replicate this sandwich at home and it is close, but not the same.
My soccer team’s uniforms came in and the boys were so excited. We ended up having a bye this weekend so they will have to wait a little longer to wear them.
The 18 Miler training continues. Before long runs I usually drink a pre workout shake. I swear by Ucan, even though I don’t love the way it tastes. It is labeled as a “Superstarch,” but it is basically a slow release carbohydrate that provides you energy over an extended period of time. As an added bonus, you mix it with water so you are hydrated before you run too! (I usually drink coffee before a run – the opposite of hydration!).
My long run this week was 14 miles, so I’m getting there! You know I have to run 18 once before the race. I hate hitting a wall on race day. Today was a good run. I am going to do all of my long training runs on the island so I am used to it again before race day.
It was a beautiful day too.
I am getting used to my new phone and I love the camera. As a bonus, I am free from the daunting reminder of how many emails I have to respond to!
I might have to take the pedometer off of my new phone though! Have you ever used one of these? I used to wear one a while ago and it is a lot of pressure!
So, I am wondering, has a pedometer or other exercise app changed your habits for the better?
The boys’ first week of school is over and it was a huge success! Phew. They are very happy in their new classes.
Perspective is everything.
SUP with the girls this morning. Yes, we had things to do and we will get to them. But since fall has decided not to arrive yet, we might as well take advantage of it!
Training for the 18 Miler was tough this week. Sun, heat and humidity really are not a runner’s friend. This race is known to be tough because it is on the island and I now understand why. The weather can be pretty extreme.
Off to a busy weekend of soccer, hiking and scouts! Hope your weekend is great!
The end of summer is time to gear up for fall races. I love fall races – the weather gets cooler and there are so many great races to choose from. Thankfully I have kept my mileage up because I can’t fully commit to a training schedule until the kids are back in school. For now I have to be happy with 8s and 10s and an occasional 13 or 14.
Here is my race schedule so far… I have to admit I am thinking of adding one 5k in there. Just one. Melissa – come run it with me. I guess it has been long enough that I have forgotten how painful they are!

Summer fun continues. Beautiful beach days that will unfortunately stop suddenly.
Dinner with friends. This restaurant has $1.00 kids meals sometimes, but you have to order off of the kids menu. Our boys just might have outgrown this. They each had two kids meals! 😉
Dinner was followed by the biggest ice cream cones you have ever seen.
Dane and I took advantage of some down time by playing ping pong. He is being picture shy lately though.
So, I am wondering, how far in advance do you sign up for races?
