A Week Off

A week off of blogging… That is the longest break I have taken yet! As you can probably guess it was not a week off of anything else. Lots of things going on! Here is what’s blogworthy.

Running in humidity

Running has been tough! Between the sudden heat, humidity and the clouds of pollen blowing by I have not had my best performances. I am still thankful to get out there considering this crazy schedule. I have even been able to run with friends lately! So much fun. :-)

My mom

Mother’s Day was so much fun. We had an amazing brunch at my parent’s house and got to relax and have fun together.

My boys 3

My boys planted the whole front garden for me (with help from Nana!) and it looks so pretty! I am very thankful too. I have no idea when I would have had time to do that!

Then we were off to Soccer Sunday! My Hurricanes made all of their moms’ proud and played an awesome game.

My soccer boys

I really do love coaching these boys.

Hurricanes 3

It is really great to have Aidan as our team scorekeeper this season. Finally, he can be a part of it with us. :-)

You can’t ask for much more than time with your most important people on Mother’s Day!

I love coaching these guys too. They are little sponges and they have such a unique perspective on the world. Plus, they are silly.

soccer shots kids

There are so many good things going on with Soccer Shots right now. I’ll tell you all about it soon.

Today I went on the 5th grade class trip to see some of the historic sites of Philadelphia. I love being able to share these times with my kids.

Liberty Bell

We saw the Liberty Bell, which I must not have seen since I was a kid because I remember it being much larger!

We visited Betsy Ross’s house.

And saw money being made at the US Mint.

But mostly I loved hanging out with my guy.

My Aidan

We were passing my favorite falafel truck as we were getting ready to leave. That’s fate or something, so I had to stop. I can’t even look at this picture without  wanting another one!

Falafel

That’s it for now. Catch you later!

30,000 Steps

Saturday was a 30,000 step day. It started out the best way possible for any day to start – with an early run with friends. Most of you know that I am really not a morning person. But getting up to run with friends is totally worth it. Great exercise, great conversation and you feel very accomplished when you are done before breakfast! Plus, the sunlight in the morning is amazing. Seeing this picture is making me want to go for another early run with these girls!

12 miles

Saturday is a soccer shots coaching day for me. We have a lot of kids come out to the park to learn soccer and it is a lot of fun. We were down a coach, so I recruited my guy to help me. He did such a great job with the kids and felt so proud when we were done. I’m looking forward to many more days of Soccer Shots with my boys.

We have been having trouble catching up with our Scout friends with everyone’s different sport schedules, so we planned a weekend hike. It was a beautiful day for a picnic and football too!

Buddies

From there we went to see the professionals play soccer. We love watching live sporting events, and we have been catching a few soccer games lately. This time we saw the Philadelphia Union play Toronto in Philadelphia. If you haven’t caught a professional soccer game yet, you should go.

This is how it became a 30,000 step day before it was even over.

I’ll have to tell you about soccer Sunday later. Hope your weekend was great!

Outside for Days

Finally! The weather has actually been nice for a few days in a row. This is the perfect time of year for running and soccer – and pretty much anything else you want to do outside.

So basically we have come inside only to eat. And to get froyo. :-)

Froyo

Aidan and I had the best trip to Philly today. We chatted and caught up on what is going on with each other. It’s nice to spend quality time with your kids.

Running and soccer on the schedule for tomorrow – what a surprise!

So, I am wondering, why is the temperature already 10 degrees warmer in the city? It’s not summer yet.

Summer’s Coming

It was such a beautiful weekend here!

Bay run

Perfect weather for running – sunny, but not too hot. It’s a good thing too, since I realized my next race is 2 weeks away and I have only run a bunch of sixes lately! Oops. So I headed out to some of my favorite areas after Saturday soccer. This weather is making me really excited for summer. Kind of like this song.

20150425_144212

The second worst thing about having a stress fracture in the fall was not being able to play soccer with my guys. (I’m sure you can guess the first worst! No running = no fun). And even though I have been back running for a while, I still have not been able to take more than a couple of shots on my keeper. These things take time, I guess. But on Saturday after Soccer Shots the boys and I hung out at the fields for a while and I was able to take shots on Dane in goal like it was nothing. :-) We had such a great time. I forgot how special those times with my guy are.

My Hurricanes had a great game this weekend! We were down a few players to a nasty virus and my guys had us sweating it out in the first half. The second half was all ours though. They came away with a nice win. I hope they have as much fun with it as I do! Here are some of my guys after the game. (No, we don’t play games with those goals.)

We had a lot to celebrate this weekend. My nephew won first place for his Arbor Day poem. Nice job!

Arbor Day

We went to his favorite restaurant to celebrate – hibachi! The kids in our family have great taste. 😉

Hibachi

With so much going on, we have missed spending time with our family lately. It was so nice to hang out with them!

Hope you had a great weekend too.

Timing and Opportunity

Sometimes timing is everything.

life is all about timing

We might wish for something or really want something to happen, but it is just not available at that time. Other times the exact thing we need might be right in front of us. Runners are always thinking about timing. Timing of races, training plans, personal records, pace. How we can change our timing…

garmin forerunner

Over time we realize that we can influence the opportunities we have, even if we can’t control their timing.

start-where-you-are

If you really want something, you usually have to put in the effort to get it. I tell my boys and my soccer kids all the time that effort and consistency will take you where you need to be. Even if you don’t know the final destination, every effort will lead you there. In running, every training run makes you a better runner. Maybe you are getting faster or you can run farther. Maybe you can sign up for the race you have been dying to run or hit your PR. Every run counts. Every practice counts. Every time you do something that is hard for you, you get better. Test your limits every once in a while.

I am so thankful for the opportunities I have had along the way and I have no regrets about taking them.

start where you are do what you can

It’s finally starting to feel like spring here, and everything feels fresh and new and exciting. Is it making you think about what you want to accomplish? It is for me and I can’t wait to see where my new opportunities will take me.

Race Recap and Other Fun Things

Half marathon time

What an amazing weekend! The April Fools half lived up to all of my memories and expectations and I was able to come home with a new PR by 2 minutes. The day started super early, as usual, with a sleepy fun car ride with Tara, Dawn and Kim. We all have our own pre race checklist and they are all so different. Coffee, oatmeal, pb&j sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, Ucann. I guess it goes to show that you just have to know what works for you because we all ended up having a great race.

SOL running club

We met up with the rest of the girls and enjoyed the pre race craziness. It was a beautiful day! I love being part of a running club/community. We are so lucky to get to share something that we all love to do.

Atlantic city boardwalk

This course is really beautiful! You run the length of the Atlantic City boardwalk then through Ventnor, Margate and to the end of the peninsula in Longport – then back. I really like out and back courses. It’s nice to have a feel for how much further you are running and I always get a huge rush of energy when I hit the halfway point. Next year I hope more of our running friends can make this race. Yes, I know my Runkeeper time is off of my chip time a little bit. I don’t stop my gps until I am past the finish line.

April fools half medal

The boys had a great time at the local amusement park with Nana while I was running. I am so lucky that my parents have the boys sleep over the night before a race. I get a great night’s sleep and the boys have fun with Nana and Popop. Thanks mom! They hit the jackpot in tickets on this game. They went home with shopping bags full of their prizes. :-)

Nana and boys

And of course there are rides.

I got to meet them there for a little while before we had to go get ice cream.

Saturday was soccer day. The little ones and my big guys. A perfect weekend.

So, I am wondering, how old were your kids when they started their first sport?

Up Next…

Getting ready to race

It’s race season!!!!  Yay! You have no idea how happy this makes me. This weekend is my favorite race of all – the April Fool’s Half marathon in Atlantic City. This was my first half and is still my favorite. I mean, how can you beat running along the boardwalk with these views.

April fools half course

Plus, it’s close enough that a lot of my friends usually run it. This has been a tough training season, weather wise, so I will miss some of my usual running buddies at the race this year. :-( Here are me and my girls from last year.

Time flies… I can’t wait to run it with Tara and Dawn this year. Here we are in 2013.

FB_IMG_1428546718026

It has been raining non stop here lately! I’m not sure we will ever get a full week of soccer practice in! Some of my boys came out despite the weather. I always remember having so much fun playing soccer in the rain. These boys loved it too.

Soccer in the rain

There was no convincing them that practice should end early, and that was fine with me. They were all smiles right up until the end.

My soccer guys

I’m hoping for a lazy morning tomorrow. We might as well get something out of spring break, right? Even our pets know the morning routine around our house. Everything is better after coffee and a protein bar.

White cat

So, I am wondering, what is your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

Rocket Run

You have to run on the first day of spring, right? I totally dismissed the weather reports right up until the first snowflake fell. Unbelievable!

first day of spring

Running in the snow is really beautiful though and hopefully I won’t get to do that again until next year. So I took advantage of it. The cold, wet weather definitely made it a rocket day, and I’m not talking about speed! TMI, I’m sure, but all runners know that running doesn’t have to be glamorous to be good. Amazingly, my leg didn’t hurt after I was done and after putting 21 miles on it over the week. :-)

recovery drinkThis is a sight that makes me happy. My favorite recovery drink is getting so hard to find in our stores! When I see it, I grab a bunch. Sorry Eileen! You should probably get dibs since you introduced me to it!

prizes

Aidan talked us into getting up early on Saturday (when will we ever get to sleep in again?) to go to a radio giveaway at the mall. We didn’t win the big prizes, but it was fun to see the boys excited about it. And now we have giant yellow bee shirts. 😉

Soccer is really back in our schedule and our weekends are going to include Soccer Shots as well as our travel team games for the rest of the spring. It’s a fun time of year.

The boys finally got out on their new bikes too! I see some bike runs in my future.

Acai Bowls and Why Social Media Is Not Bad

running

Run # 2 this week, followed by the “worst thing ever for my leg” long drive, and I am feeling ok. Fingers crossed. I did have the best acai bowl after my run, so maybe that helped. I am trying really hard to keep my nutrition the best it can be to get past this. If you haven’t had an acai bowl yet, you should try one.

Acai bowl

Acai (ah-sigh-ee) berries are small purple berries that look similar to blueberries and come from the acai palm tree. They are considered a superfood because they are packed with antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. The only problem is that they grow mostly in the Brazilian amazon rain forest so they are not easy to find. You can get a bunch of your friends together and get 60 3.5 ounce bags of frozen pureed berries from Amazon. Or you can go to the Sambazon website and find a local store to buy smaller quantities.

Acai berries

Ok, so once you have the pureed acai berries, what do you do with them? They are delicious in shakes, smoothies, over yogurt. But I think one of the best ways to try them is in an acai bowl. An acai bowl is kind of like pudding where the main ingredient is acai berries. Then you add pretty much any other ingredient that you like. Some of the most popular additions are bananas and granola. Here are some recipes to get you started.

Hope you love them as much as I do! Speaking of things to love, I can’t stop listening to this song lately.

A parting thought about social media. It gets a bad wrap pretty often. You may hear of teenagers abusing it or about the “annoying” posts your friends put up. But overall, social media is a positive way to share what is good in our lives. That may be something simple like a great new recipe you tried or a workout you accomplished, or something major like overcoming a health issue. Seeing our friends’ accomplishments posted pushes us to be better as well. I’ll take a community of inspiration and support any day over the dramatic, negative reporting of traditional media. Just saying.

Bag Heaven

Today I went to browse in one of my favorite places. I could literally spend hours here.

vera bradley

Vera Bradley bags just make me happy and I knew they would make it feel even more like spring. The Manor House Shops has an entire large room that overflows into the hallway that is dedicated just to Vera Bradley. The boys had a half day today so they came with me. I probably should have thought that one through a bit more. Bag shopping is not their favorite pastime – but they were good sports.

20150317_131204

I’m pretty sure I know which one I want…. Maybe. I did get a new bag today though.

soccer shots

It is so much fun coaching the little guys at Soccer Shots. I can’t believe my guys were ever that little anymore! Since it is St. Patrick’s Day I had to wear green for them. I am so glad I did! One little girl (in a green tutu and a green leprechaun hat) called us twins for the whole class. 😉

Leprechaun

Today was a big day for my “little” guy. Dane traded in his glasses for contacts. Do you remember the feeling when you first got contacts? His smile was priceless. I love seeing my boys so happy. Life doesn’t give us enough of those moments of pure joy.

new contacts

He was a champ learning how to wear them. And since we were at the mall, I thought I could talk the boys into a picture with the Easter Bunny. Nothing wrong with mixing holidays, right? This is as close as they would get.

Hope your day was as good as ours!
