The boys and I spent a fun filled day in the City yesterday. We went in to see the play the Bronx Bombers. http://www.bronxbombersplay.com/
This play was narrated by Yogi Berra as he deals with an infamous argument between Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson at Fenway Park in 1976. As Yogi worries about how to make things right on his beloved team, he dreams of the advice he would get from the Yankees greatest players. In his dream, Yankee greats Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Elston Howard, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter share a meal, reminisce, and give Yogi advice. I have to tell you, this was the best Broadway show I have ever seen.
The show was being performed at the Circle in the Square Theater – a theater I had never been to before. It was an incredibly intimate setting, with stadium seating around the stage. The boys and I were in the second row and could practically touch the actors.
The boys learned a lot about the Yankees’ history and really enjoyed the experience. This was the last performance for this play, so we were able to speak to the actors and get autographs after the show.
Before the show the boys and I stopped for lunch at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/ This diner is famous for the actors/wait staff that sing Broadway tunes throughout your meal.
We enjoyed the experience, but the food was pretty bad. Oh well – at least it was fun.
We decided to have dessert for dinner to make up for our disappointing lunch. After the show, we headed to the upper west side to Café Lalo. http://cafelalo.com/cafe/ This is a Parisian style dessert café notable for its appearance in the movie “You’ve Got Mail.”
Boy did we pig out! Cannolis, chocolate covered strawberries, pie… Did I mention I had an authentic Bellini? (With real freshly squeezed peach juice!) The best I have had since Harry’s Bar. http://www.harrysbarvenezia.com/
We decided to walk some of our “dinner” off around Columbus Circle. But fist, the boys just had to hail a cab. They love hailing cabs! I think they still can’t believe that the cab drivers listen to them. Too bad they were hailing cabs going the wrong direction.
It was a great day in the city. Can’t wait for our next city adventure!
So, I am wondering, what is the best play you have seen?
